So I don’t usually test this often, but decided to today and not sure of my results . After 2-3 drops of the R-003 (I did add the 5 per the test directions) the sample water had an ever so slight pink tinge but it wasn’t pink like the sample after the DPD powder for the FC test that precedes it. I added a couple of drops of the R-0871 and it went back to clear.

So does any slight pink indicate some amount of CC? How do I get the CC to zero?

Also wondering about when I would want to slam or shock the pool? I was discussing pool stuff with a colleague at the hospital and he said he shocks his pool weekly and was shocked that I didn’t and even more shocked that I never had. I try to follow the TFP method and keep my FC on high side of the range per my CYA. I have never had a FC less than 3 even before my SWG got turned on. I test pH and FC almost daily or at least every other day. My water has always been crystal clear too.

Anyway, can you advise if I need to shock my pool given my maybe 0.5 or 1 CC. My FC is 8 today.

I added 1 cup of muriatic acid on Saturday night and pH is still 8/8.1 today . Didn’t check yesterday. Is it ever going to normalize? My Alk is 70. Seems like I will never have a ph below 7.9.

As always, appreciate any feedback/suggestions/tips.

So, one heaping scoop of dpd powder with the vial filled to 10ml will give you .5 count for every droplet of R-0871, meaning 6 droplets will be 3ppm. Immediately after this test you'd test for CC's with 5 drops of R-0003. Each drop of R-0871 here counts for .5 too if it turned pink.
Any count above .5 on the CC test is suspect and would render a oclt.
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
Should the OCLT fail you then a slam is in order.
TFP's methodology is to keep the chemistry so there isn't a fanomima of shocking weekly and is never necessary if yo

u follow to the "T".
Mabe you've forgotten how things work around here so I'll drop some links.

Zero and 0.5 for CC is basically perfect. You dont need to worry about the 0.5. Its normal and as close to zero as it gets lots of the time. Just keep an eye on it if it goes over 1ppm CC.

Thats a slang term that isnt very specific on what it is. Does your friend mean dumping a bunch of chlorine in the water? How much? Was the chlorine low? Why once a week?

You’re pool needs chlorine every day. If you are keeping it at the correct level every day then theres no need to dump a bunch in once a week. Read through the links above to gain confidence on the why’s.

pH like FC will never totally stabilze. pH rises all the time but if you let the TA get lower to around 50/60 the rise will slow down a lot.
