Coating on tiles

We had our pool resurfaced with Diamond Brite about 3 months ago. Part of the job was to replace the decorative tile on the steps. I noticed a few days ago that the upper half of the tiles had a chalky like substance sticking to them. I was able to scrape it a little bit using my thumbnail. In all cases the chalky substance is below the water line. Any thoughts would be helpful.Step tiles.jpg

Sounds like you may be dealing with scale already. Can you post a full set of water test results? We recommend home testing with a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit. See the link below for more great info. Welcome to TFP!

Why would the scale be only on the upper half of every tile on every step? It's like almost a straight line. All of it is below the water line.

The same question applies to just about any other chemical scenario, so it's too early to tell for sure. If you can collect some of it, put it in a pile and pour acid on it to see if it fizzles. In the meantime, some water test results would help us further.
