Clueless Newbie

Just keep adding the same amount of bleach you have been, by now you should have a pretty good idea of how much you need.

This is taking a while. Pictures? How's the water look? What's the overnight FC loss?

Pics a few posts above. Bleach amounts have varied all over due to FC# If we add to much what affect will it have?

We have determined that the CYA crept up from 70 to 85 so we adjusted target according to the CYA chart. We are working off of a CYA of 90 (rounded up) and a FC target of 35. We have started on the 2nd week of the SLAM yesterday with new target. Hoping it works this time. Off to buy more bleach. :handwave:

Don't go over SLAM level on purpose. A little over won't "help" more, too much can damage liners and equipment.

I'm about to ride up there and test that pool myself!:testkit:

I'm curious- just how expensive is your water there? My water is pretty pricey (or we just use a lot??) yet for convenience I would just change out the water and get this over with. You need to consider if the cost of the clean water is really more than the cost in bleach and *your time* particularly as your CYA has turned out to be higher than you thought.

Yip :flower:

That will be a bit of a ride just to test LOL
Definitely will try not to go over... but I will be flying blind as soon as I run out of R-0871 until tomorrow

Not exactly sure how to figure out what the charge will be, I suck at math, but here are the rates, we live outside of city limits and that is why the rates are so high...
this is the link to the rates ... http://www.cloversc.org/docview.aspx?docid=25224

OK, I'm a little excited!!! I was able to see the pool brush slightly when I brushed the bottom of the pool!:kim:
Todays pic it was cloudy (day2) yesterday was sunny, but you can still tell there is a definite difference in color!!
I have been adding a lot of bleach between today and yesterday, is this a normal thing when stuff starts to work?

Your household uses (usually) a 3/4 inch hook up.. so you're already being charged $28/month for that.... then your service is a charge based on each 1000 gallons of water. So it reads if you use 0-2000 gallons of water the fee is $6.66/1000 gallons. When you use more water the cost per 1000 gallons goes up because it is a discouragement to use, so 2001 gallons to 10,000 gallons now costs $11.10 per 1000 gallons.

If you emptied your pool entirely, the most it would cost you to refill from scratch would be $149.50. ($11.10 x 13.5)

Yeah, its not dirt cheap but... how much is your time and effort worth, not to mention the cost of bleach and reagents?

WOW, you are a wiz! Thank you!!!
Well, if this SLAM doesn't work then we will shut it down for the season and either do a full drain/refill or get a new pool next season. (there is a split in the aluminum outside)

Few questions about the OCLT
1. I continue the day as I am still performing the SLAM?
2. Then this evening I go ahead with the FAS_DPD test correct?
3. Do I perform all the tests to get accurate #'s before doing the OCLT? ie; PH,FC CC etc

I need a little explanation on the underlined step of the OCLT...
2. After the sun goes down, and at least 30 minutes after your last chemical addition of the day, test your water for FC using the FAS-DPD test making sure your FC level is at least above 3ppm.

My CYA was 90 and Target SLAM is 35...
Do I need to let me FC level drop from 35 to 10-12 then perform the FAS-DPD?
What if my CC is 0 which it had been 2 days ago when I tested for it. I will test again next time I test for FC level.

I am so grateful for all your alls help, please help guide me on this next step so I don't loose this pool again.

YAY!! :kim:
so being cloudy is not a problem?

So happy for ya! OCLT is next!

That is very good progress, nice job!

Yes, being cloudy is an indication to continue the SLAM Process. Here is a more detailed instruction for performing the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. Only the FAS/DPD test is needed, no need for other tests. Also, the PH test is not valid when FC is above 10ppm.

Here are the three criteria for completing a SLAM Process
You are done when:
CC is 0.5 or lower;
You pass an OCLT (ie overnight FC loss test shows a loss of 1.0 ppm or less);
And the water is clear.

Staci, very happy to see the progress. Try not to let the testing overwhelm you. Easy stuff. You can ignore the pH test still. Throughout today, continue with your SLAM number like you have been, maintaining that FC of 35. The sun goes down a bit early now, so wait before going to bed, take one last FC test using the FAD-DPD tester to get an accurate result. Since you are still technically in the SLAM, your FC should be 35 at that point (bedtime). When you wake up, test immediately before the sun hits the water. You do not want to lose anymore than 1 FC by morning or else the OCLT failed and you continue the SLAM.

Now keep this in mind .... your water is blue which is great, but it's still cloudy which means it is still working to kill organics or filter-out the dead stuff. So if the water isn't so clear that you can see the bottom really well, then you may want to wait another day or two before attempting the OCLT. It's usually the very last step in the SLAM. It's up to you though. I just don't want you to be too disappointed or waste anymore R-0871 drops than you need. Best of luck to you, and have a nice weekend.

Thank you so much Pat, you have been a great help and thank you for explaining things to make them more clear for me to understand since I am new to this whole process. I think I will do today and tomorrow at SLAM target and see what the pool looks like tomorrow evening and then will determine whether or not to do the OCLT.

If it was me, I keep the SLAM going till it was clear as gin! Then, that night do the OCLT. I think one more day will do it.

Thanks I agree, I am going to do today and tomorrow@ SLAM and then report back :) Hopefully it's looking like Gin tomorrow eve :p

WELL DONE! Now for the final push to Gin like! Once we get you to Gin then we will get you to Jewel like sparkles. I can't wait to hear from you when your pool is TFP clear! :sun: It will sparkle like never before. You just thought it has been clear in the past LOL

You have a solid plan. Keep us up to date on what you see.
