Third year pool owners, but this is the first year we haven’t just drained the whole thing and started with new fresh water. Removed the cover May 25 to find a green swamp. Brushed, vacuumed a lot, and started following a “lazy SLAM” because of my work schedule. After three days of adding in LC according to pool math, the green hadn’t budged. This is when I didn’t have my dose of P.O.P. and added in 12 pounds of 65% Cal Hypo. The pool went from green to white (like a pool full of milk) by the end of the evening last Saturday. This turned to a cloudy blue by Monday afternoon, that hasn’t changed since. I finally ordered and received a K2006 Salt test to get things figured out for myself.

Fast forward to yesterday, when I decided that either a “by the book” SLAM will clear the pool up or I’m going to drain it, remove it, and be done trying to be a pool owner.

I started at 430 yesterday with the LC additions to bring me to 18ppm FC. Tested and maintained FC levels every two hours until 1130 last night. I couldn’t get a test run today and get back to adding LC until 11am, when my FC was at 12. Backwashed the filter before the 1pm addition of LC. The picture below is the white stuff coming out of the filter every time I backwash for the past week. I’ve also included a picture of the pool from 2pm today. This is how it has looked for the last week with zero noticeable change from day to day. Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated, as I would very much like to have our pool usable before the second month of “summer” is over for the kids.

Welcome to TFP! You're on the right track it would appear. The K-2006 should serve you well. Be sure to follow all the details outlined on the SLAM Process page for best success. Your pool water has transformed quite a bit already. Be sure to maintain the proper FC level (based on your current CYA) per the FC/CYA Levels and eventually that cloudiness will change to clear. Stay steady and patient. You'll get it.

Pretty mad at myself for not doing the tests myself. This morning I ran a new CYA test to find that it was not at the 45 ppm that I’ve been using for PoolMath, but actually at 70ppm. So is the time I’ve spent thus far all wasted when it comes to doing a SLAM? The water was more on the tan than blue side of things this morning. I vacuumed to waste and then just pumped to waste until the limit of what the filter would be able to do without running it dry as the water level reached just above the filter inlet, and am now refilling. I’m hoping to get the CYA diluted/removed to a number closer to 30 so I don’t have to use barrels of bleach SLAMing this thing.

I know I have myself to blame for not testing the CYA number myself and instead trusting a family member to know how to read the directions, but this kind of thing really makes me want to just throw in the towel and let the idea pool ownership be a thing of the past. Here’s to hoping I get better numbers on a test after the pool is refilled.
