Hi everyone, we could use some help here with our pool. Husband and I just opened our pool two weeks ago to blooming algae. We normally open our pool a lot sooner but we were getting our fence replaced and the project took a lot longer due to rain delays.
When we opened ourselves (pool guy wasn't immediately available) two weeks ago, we can see through the water with lots of algae visible. We dumped in 12 gallons of liquid shock and a whole bottle of BioGuard Algae Complete (what our pool guy normally do,). after a few days the water looked pretty clear with "dead" algae on the bottom. We tried to do initial cleaning using the cleaner hooks up to the skimmer but the sucker doesn't have very good suction. Then we brushed and tried to vacuum using our Dolphin robot. All the robot did was taking the dead algae in and spit it out and made the pool cloudy. So we let it settle for a few days, but it became green again after a rain storm. We decided to follow the slamming process. Where things went terribly wrong is we decided to put in 15 ounces of Utikem 50% Algaecide Concentrate during slamming one night. Next morning, the pool looked weirdly chemically cloudy, not the normal dirty cloudy but the water looked abnormally and uniformly thick, can't see the bottom at all. This never happened before which lead us to the Algaecide which we used for the first time being the culprit. We are still slamming keep chlorine level at around 10 but the water is still thick with no visibility to the bottom. It's been a whole week of slamming.
Does anyone have information if the Utikem 50% Algaecide concentrate has copper in them? The main active ingredient is : Quat, Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, no copper listed anywhere. We normally have been using the Bioguard 1, 2, 3 after the pool guy opens the pool and it had been easy peasy. Husband is mad because it was my idea to open the pool ourselves. So if there is excess copper, what would be the best way to remove it?
We also only have a MerydI Pool Spar 7 in 1 test strip. It had worked well before because it was fairly straight forward with the bioguard products. We purchased Bioguard complete 911 and is debating if we should put it in after tonight (another rain storm!) and hope it will perform miracles. At this point, we are just dumping money in every day.
In the mean time, our Dalphine robot vacuum broke. any recommendation on a new one that can actually clean the dead algae?
Based on test strip, we are getting the following
Total Hardness 300
Free Chlorine 4
Bromine 4
Total Chlorine 9
Cyanuric acid between 0 - 30 (just realized its really low)
total alkalinity80
PH 7.4
