I started a SLAM hoping to clear up the pool before closing. There were frogs living in it. It was a deep murky green. My CYA is at 90. (yes i know it’s high) I tested with the 2006c kit. I’m keeping fc at ~36 as recommended. cc is at a steady .5 every time I test. It’s been pretty expensive and a week into this and $200 worth of chlorine later the pool is still incredibly cloudy. I figured it would have cleared up by now even with the high cya.

I’ve deep cleaned my sand filter. I vacuum blindly but it doesn’t seem to help much. I also brush the walls and floor every day.

I’ve seen some strange behavior from my filter. Pressure has not been rising. It’s at a steady 10 psi.

Adding DE does raise it so it must work right? But then if i turn it off and turn it back on pressure goes back to 10. What could be happening?

Already did a deep clean. I even purchased a sand filter cleaner and let it sit. Backwashed it. Then I opened it up and deep cleaned with a hose for half an hour. Added sand up to the line (was about half an inch low). Anyway still same thing. I take photos of the steps and I haven’t seen any progress as far as how deep I can see. Visibility is like half a foot.

The pool seems to use up about 6-7 fc per day. I’m adding ~3-4 gallons a day. One or two in the morning and one or two at night.

I’m about to give up and just close the pool and deal with it next year. Hopefully cya will be lower at that point after the partial drain and refill. Is it too early to throw in the towel?

Welcome to TFP! You definitely still have a large algae issue. Following the SLAM Process is the right way to go, but getting it done before closing may not be realistic. When are you scheduled to close?

Be sure to bookmark our Pool Care Basics page as well.

Thanks for the replies. I’ve been doing a ton of reading. The pool got this bad because I tried bioactive cya reducer. It seems like conditions for it to work are impossible to achieve outside of a lab. I called them up and they told me if the pool already has algae the enzymes attack the algae instead of the cya.

Man that’s disappointing to hear about the failed attempts. I may try a water replacement to lower the levels at least to something a little more reasonable like 70. Not sure if I want to drain such highly chlorinated water into my back yard though.

Would there be any issues if I just closed the pool the way it is?

If you're going to replace water, I'd encourage you to get to where you want to be. Many people try the "little at a time" method which only prolongs how long it takes and how much it costs.

When I pumped out to reduce CYA, I did it during a day of good rainstorms (both to help carry away the water, but also to start replacement.) No issue with it at all, and no harm to plants/trees/grass.

So i’m still fighting the cloudiness. I shut off the pump to let everything settle and vacuum it but it seems like while vacuuming everything was just going back into the pool. Is this a problem with my filter or are the particles just too fine for sand to deal with? I washed the filter out manually pretty well so I don’t think it’s channeling. Should I just try a floc at this point?

Yes I’m still chlorinating but this seems like a battle I cannot win at this cya level.
I'm in the same boat as you right now! After 10 days of slam I began to vacuum to waste. I did everything I could. My own body said it was done. I have read so much and watched so many vids. Now my pool looks a lot like yours in water color. Today the FC is at 13 and my CYA has come down to 65 (after all the vac to waste), so tomorrow I should be able to check PH once the FC is 9.5 or lower. I will add acid and see if that helps CLEAR the water. High PH can make water cloudy. Wish you luck and don't give up yet bc this old lady hasn't!

With murky green water, the SLAM process is not likely to be finished in just one week, especially with that high CYA. Either replace some water to lower the CYA or keep going to clear it. It may take a couple more weeks if it’s losing 6-7 FC each day.

But I’d personally stay away from the DE. Too much opportunity for it to get blown back into the pool water. I hate that stuff, so I might be biased against it.

Just a reminder that there is no 65 CYA - it's either 60 or it's 70. If it's in between, round up - that small difference can impact SLAM effectiveness.

I’m draining the water now and I noticed the liner got heavily bleached from all the chlorine. I guess this should be a warning to anyone attempting a slam at high cya numbers. I’m not sure if that chlorine to cya chart is accurate for high cya levels.

I rechecked my cya again and it’s still 90. The dot is barely visible in the shade on a sunny day. Disappears at 80.CD55E543-A31C-4894-91E1-606342C098A9.jpeg

If the dot disappears at 80, then your CYA is 80ppm. Or is that just rounding up to 90?

I'm using Super Blue Clarifier and it's working. Hopefully that's just residue on ur liner 🙏
