I'm first reading about polyquat and using it when closing a pool on one of the forums. From what know about polyquat, is that it is a pretty heavy duty algicide. Is it necessary if I'm having few incursions of algae? I had some green algae issues on occasion this summer, but nothing that wasn't quickly resolved.

You will find a bit of a split between those that use it and those that don't. Both with success.

I'm staunchly in the Polyquat 60 camp. I close at 1/2 slam FC and use PQ60. I typically open to 2 FC in the spring. I also close late (water temps below 60) and open early (before water temps get to 60).

This is a good read for you and talks to PQ60.

If you have algae now, you need chlorine not algaecide.

I ordered some Polyquat based on everyone's comments. I was planning on closing the pool this next weekend, but temps are forecast in the mid 70's. My water temp is just under 60 degrees now. I don't want to chance it going up with the warmth. Strange fall this year. Wet and warm .

I guess I don't need to worry about the pool warming up in this warmer weather. It's stayed cloudy and rainy, so the pool temp went down. Now at under 55 degrees. I raised everything to SLAM level yesterday and lost some of the FC last night. Probably because I brushed a little green algae out of the nooks and crannies due to some negligence on my part. A little shocked (no pun intended) by that, but I'll bring it back up and see what tomorrow brings.
