Clay Soil Pool Closing

Hello all,

Last winter we had lots of rain, and the liner was partially floating when I removed the cover.

My soil is notorious for having perc issues, and because of this I believe is why I have issues with water getting behind the liner even when the pool is at normal operating levels.

This being said, to prevent any issues over the winter, once I purge and cap the lines, can I refill the pool to or slightly above skimmer level to help keep the liner from floating over the winter? I plan to run a sump pump to prevent over flow situations.

What does your property look like regarding drainage? Any areas near the pool with standing water after a heavy rain or a creek nearby? While sandy soil would help drain faster than clay, it all comes down to the ground water level compared to the water level in your pool.

I had an area near my pool which was always a swamp in winter/spring. A few years ago we received 12 inches of rain in 2 weeks and my liner floated. I ended up digging a dry well and installing a sump pump. This has completely resolved any drainage issues in that area and I don't have to worry about the liner floating.

Do you cover your pool during winter? One of the things I always do is to not pump the water off my tarp for a few days after a really heavy rain. The extra weight on top of it is insurance that the weight of the water in my pool will be heavier/higher than the groundwater. I don't see any issues with you keeping the water level higher, especially when you know a really heavy rain system is moving in. You're not really in an area to get a hard freeze but as you mentioned you can adjust the water level as needed with your sump pump.
