chlorine tabs and liquid chlorine

I will say - I was a victim of the tri-chlor tabs for my pool. Granted I only had a 14' pool from walmart, but I fought algae after about a month of filling, and was a nightmare. Ended the pool season early with a CYA of 140ppm...

Said to heck with it...cut the pool liner and let it all run out.... threw it away..

Bought a new Intex 18' XTR pool...and went to Lowe's this past weekend and bought five bottles (gallons) of their liquid chlorine and will plan to use that this year.... I did buy a K-2006 test kit. They were out of the TF-100 test kit...but this has to be better than the cheap walmart brand I was using last year...

Mknauss is correct. TFTestkits DOES NOT run out of the TF-100. They are located in Creedmoor, NC and your kit would've gotten to Greensboro (normal UPS) today if you ordered yesterday afternoon!

I’d highly consider getting a SWG if you can. Using tabs is a nightmare here in HOUSTON as your FC demand could hit 4+easily from May-October which means more tabs and hence higher CYA. If you are using CalHypo you just swapped high CYA for high CH. anyways if you went to LC you would be adding LC every day here in our heat. That’s every morning lugging your FC to dump in the pool. A royal pain in you know where. An SWG eliminates all this and u can enjoy your pool versus “working” on it. Yes there is maintainance with SWG but SIGNIFICANTLY less than LC or Tabs. My buddies in my neighborhood are all switching to SWG.

You could do this but the problem is two fold - 1. it will take too long to get your CYA levels up which causes problem 2. the chlorine will be quickly burned off by the sun while you're waiting for the CYA levels to increase from the pucks.

You're best bet is to buy CYA at the store and put in enough to get it to 30-50 because of the hot sun and then use pucks to supplement if you get a lot of rain and have to lower your water levels a bit. CYA does not evaporate or loose it's strength. If you get it too high you have to do a partial drain. If it's too low it will not protect your chlorine from the sun.

Save the pucks "for a rainy day" ;)
I second this. In my place, I can’t get CYA. So the only way is to use trichlor. It took me about 2mths to get the CYA up to 70.
