Chlorine Question

In my search to find a reasonable source of fresh LC I discovered my local Agway carries LC in 2.5 and 5 gal containers (picture below).

Last thing my PB said as he was leaving after opening the pool was “Never use any of that sh*t in the blue or yellow jugs”. He also said “Stop by the store and I’ll get you the good stuff”.

Is there any merit to that statement about the chlorine in the blue jugs? From what I can tell chlorine is chlorine is chlorine. Or can the 90% “other ingredients” have an impact? I thought LC is chlorine, water, and a little salt.

If you guys give the thumbs up I’m going to stop by Agway after work tomorrow to check pricing and date codes.

Thanks for everything you all do!

You are basically correct. I'm not familiar with those jugs or that specific product, but if the main ingredient is sodium hypochlorite, you should be good.

Well, just filter it through the sales translator, "Don't buy stuff from other people, come to my store so I can make a sale".

Now, if you PB has stronger stuff cheaper and won't try to push testing or other chemicals on you during the visit, that's one thing. However, if this stuff is 10% and is a decent price then it's fine. The other 90% is just water and a little bit of sodium hydroxide to keep the pH high.

That’s what I figured, just wanted a sanity check.

So I stopped by after work today. Here is what I found:

PROS:
Strength is 12.5%
Price is $13.99 for 5 gallons

CONS:
No date code that I could find
Stored outside, although it hasn’t gotten to hot here yet

When I’m ready to replenish I’m going to pick some up. In the meantime I need to find a spout that will thread on for easy dispensing.

I go to pool store some times to get chlorine. they have those same jugs. have not had any issues with the chlorine in them. only issue is getting top off of it as its on really tight. I use 2.5 gallon bucket and pour chlorine in to that. then dump bucket in to the pool.
