Chlorine lock?

The 2nd most important thing is to monitor pH. I think ideal is 7.2 to 7.8

Once you get familiar with the pH tendency to go up or down, you can fine tune it some. For example, mine wants to go up, so when I see it going above 7.8, I add MA to target 7.5. If I notice I am having to add MA more often, then I will target 7.2 a couple of times. This will get my TA down just enough to get into its sweet spot.

Re backwash and brushing questions, wait to backwash when filter pressure is 20% to 25% above your clean pressure. Mine works best when it's a bit dirty. Brushing is done to remove biofilm that is forming over algae in areas of the pool with poor circulation. I brush weekly myself, usually the night before I vacuum so the dust settles for the vacuum to grab it.
