So why in my hot tub is it I have a very high Free chlorine content and pretty much NO total chlorine? Ph and total alkalinity is fine, low on hardness but that's just my water. Tub is crystal clear..

ao,

Because it has very little water compared to your pool and I suspect you do not open the cover enough..

It does not take many people very long to contaminate a hot tub. You need to add chlorine to kill the stuff after each soak and then you need to open the cover to the sun to allow the CC's to burn off.

Even then, a lot of things that we carry into the hot tub will never be oxidized by the chlorine.. that is why you need to drain and refill about every 90 days.

Thanks,

Jim R.

But how does that effect "total Chlorine"? Tons of free and no total doesn't make sense, to me anyway.

Mostly just me and the wife use it, every evening and twice a day on the weekends. I change water about 3 times a year.

And I shock after use with a non chlorine shock. (most of the time anyway)

ao,

Sorry, for some reason I read that you had very high CC... Apparently was not awake... :p

My answer was about reducing the CC level..

How are you measuring Total Chlorine?

I measure FC and CC and add the two together to get TC

TC by itself is a pretty useless number.

Thanks,

Jim R.

CC ? What is that? I only see Free and Total..

What product are you useing to shock with? Do you use chlorine on a daily basis and add non-chlorine shock after a soak?

1 inch Chlorine tabs to maintain chlorine, and Leslies non chlorine shock

How are you testing? That sounds suspiciously like test strip results. TC less than FC is impossible, which points out exactly why we don't trust test strips.

If you are using strips, you need to order a real test kit like the TF-100 or K-2006.

ao,

Check out this Pool School Link.... Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry

You know the chlorine smell you get at a public pool? The smell is caused by used up chlorine... We use the Combined Chlorine (CC) value to tell us the condition of the water. High CC's indicate a problem with the sanitization of the pool or spa.

I suggest that you take a look at our Pool School and see what TFP is all about... Pool School - Pool School

Thanks,

Jim R.
