Got done cleaning filter cartridges, put back together, turned on pump ,opened pressure valve till water came out. Shut valve back off of filter. Water started just gushing through the chlorinator and won't stop unless I turn off the pumps. This has never happened

Take it as a sign from above. Inline trichlor chlorinators should not be used with pools with heaters containing copper components. Trichlor is not a sustainable means of chlorination. It will lead to high levels of chlorine stabilizer (CYA). Replace it with a saltwater chlorine generator (SWG).

Use a saltwater chlorine generator, even though the pool isn't salt water?

In the short term get a floater to put your Trichlor tablets in and remove the chlorinator.

In the longer term consider getting a SWG. A SWG pool is a chlorine pool where the chlorine comes from the SWG breaking down the salt and releasing the chloride in sodium chloride aka salt.

Actually, all pools that have ever used a sodium-based chlorine (sodium hypochlorite, sodium-dichlor, sodium-trichlor tablets) are a "salt water" pool, but just don't have quite enough salt to run an SWG.
A quick-fix for that problem is to get a threaded pipe plug for the port the black tube is in (take the fitting with you to match the size) and a 1/2" threaded pipe cap for the port the body is threaded onto (use many wraps of Teflon tape around the male threads). The body will unscrew from that T.
