Chemicals seem to have no effect

I don’t think I see one for chlorine.
It's in there as bleach. We don't call it bleach on the open forums because household bleaches all have additives these days and we don't want any newbs buying it by mistake, but they're both Sodium Hyperchlorite / bleach.

4/4/24 test results. Tapwater

FC 0.5
CC 0
CH 250-275
pH 7.9 see picture
chlorine 0
TA 90
CYA 0 (did not test for CYA)

I have 2 gallons of liquid chlorine on hand. Need to go buy the CYA this morning for sock method. How much liquid chlorine should I put in the pool now? I am missing that calculation somewhere in Pool Math app. I do have the filter running. it is 60 degrees out.

Get 30 CYA in there. The liquid is difficult when not using a full jug because it clumps up on the bottom but its what we have to work with so shake the bejeezus out of it and add most the gallon.

Add 5ppm chlorine 20 mins later with the pump running throughout.

Get a pool sample for the PH and CH. TA should be fine for now.

If it helps any, your pH is well below 8.2. Probably 7.9 would be my estimate from the picture. Its the color hue you’re comparing not the exact shade.

OK. I am going to use the powder CYA. Will get that pronto. I just put the CH reading in there. It’s 250 or 275 275 is more blue. here’s my Pool Math calc

Change the FC to 5 and not 2 in PM and add what it says. Add it back to 5 if it dips until the CYA is well mixed and reading. Then you can expect a 1 to 2 ppm loss per day right now, confirmed by testing. Your target is min + daily loss + 1 to 2 insurance FC. It's a moving target as the daily loss increases until the mid season, then decreases slowly throughout the back half of the season

Close enough and perfect. Let that be where it is.

Do you mean a pH meter? I have one, but the batteries are dead so need to get new batteries.

So am I doing slam method for chlorine or no? Something tells me no? Here’s my screen.

OK, more questions. I now have the CYA. Do I put several socks in the skimmer basket at once? I’d be surprised if I got more than a pound in one sock. (note: I did get 2.5 pounds in one large mens sock).

Use the PH test that came in the kit.

Not yet. One step at a time means we're less likely to foul one up. :) Get the CYA going so the FC might hold. Do your best to keep FC above min until the CYA registers.

Use as many as you need. I need alot and tie it up in a tshirt like a Hobo stick. However you tie it up, hang it carrot on a stick like in front of a running return. Some time later, or even tomorrow with cool water, it'll squish right out.

For the ph test - hold the comparator infront of something white so it doesn’t muck up the colors & you can make them out.
I use the blank browser page on my phone.

Hi there. It’s been in the water for an 3 hours. I think the filtration system stopped briefly cause I haven’t figured out how to just keep it on indefinitely. ;/ Anyway, went out there, put some gloves on and squished it…about 1/3 of it is gone, I just did a CYA test and there’s no reading at all. Do I keep waiting before I add chlorine?

Give it a bit and squish it again. Repeat until it's empty. Be careful with the last bits, you don't want them falling out and sitting on your floor.

Unless you have a known aversion, you don't need gloves. Just rinse your hands in the pool after. I swim mine around in a CLOUD of it. (When it's warmer).

there’s no reading at all.
It won't read until it's all disolved, and has a while to mix.

Get 5ppm FC in there now, just so you have some chlorine. It'll burn off in a few hours with no CYA so replenish to 5ppm when you can if you're around. Every few hours is enough. (Only during sunlight).

Just when you thought I was catching on. LOL... 5ppm chlorine....am i using the pool match so do I add 64 oz? I have 10% liquid chlorine

Just when you thought I was catching on. LOL
That's ok, you're doing GREAT. It took me two years, so. Yeah. *Zero* finger pointing from me. :)

Also check poolmath and dose muriatic acid for the PH, from 8 to 7.6.

my muriatic says it's 31.45%. Pool Math shows that as 20 degrees Baume? just found this: Muriatic acid Is a 20° Baume (31.45%) hydrochloric acid solution used for cleaning and preparing concrete prior to etching, coating and sealing. Muriatic acid can also be used to lower the pH in pools and spas.

so with 90 for TA, I get that I should add 9.4 oz
