CH Level Won't Go Up

I have an18,000 gal pool. CH level is at 70 according to Leslie's Water Analysis report. I added 25 lbs of Calcium Chloride on Friday. Test again on Saturday at Leslie's and CH was still at 70. I added an additional 15 lbs of Calcium Chloride Saturday night and tested my water again at Leslie's this morning, and CH is still at 70. Any ideas as to why my CH level hasn't changed?

Hi, welcome to TFP! I would suspect that there is a problem either with Leslie's Water analysis or the calcium chloride you were sold. Is there another store where you can have the water tested?

We recommend our members have their own high quality FAS/DPD test kit such as a TF 100 or a Taylor K2006. When you are able to perform your own tests you will have reliable results to use to treat the water in your pool. You don't want to over shoot your calcium level, since you can only lower it by draining and replacing water. Too much calcium can cause problems with scale and clouding.

What type of surface is your pool? If you could complete the signature for your pool that will help us trouble shoot the problem. Could you post a picture of the product you were using to raise the calcium level?

Those test results sound awfully fishy. My tap water comes in higher than your pool water on CH. And since water evaporates but CH remains, the pool will always be higher than the fill water.

My suspicion is those test results aren't just wrong, but grossly wrong. You would do well to invest in your own test kit. Then you would only need to go to the pool store for odd bits of hardware

I'm having a similar problem with Snow Joe

In June I got a 50 pound bag of Snow Joe Melt (model MELT50CC) by ordering online from Home Depot and picking it up in the store. The bag said "Enhanced with extenders." I don't have it anymore but I'm pretty sure the ingredients were just sodium chloride and calcium chloride in that order. The chemical formula is CaC12 2H2O according to the Safety data sheet (follow link on this page: https://www.snowjoe.com/products/melt-50-lb-resealable-bag-calcium-chloride-crystals-ice-melter ). The product looks like this:

(From the Snow Joe site.)

To me it looks like mostly salt. I've never added salt to the pool but it measured 800 this morning.

I started switching to TFPC in early June. Based on tests at Leslie's I drained 1/2 my pool water and got the CYA down to 70, and CH went from 275 to 125. Being cautious I aimed for a CH of 250 and added 30 pounds (based on Pool Math) of Melt. Shortly after that I then did my first SLAM, which included three backwashes and draining 2" of rain. Just after the SLAM my Taylor test kit arrived and I measured the CH at 190, so my original addition of Snow Joe brought CH up but was probably short of 250.

Because of further draining since then the CH had gotten down to 170 so I decided to get it to 200 to get the CSI closer to zero. Five days ago I added eight pounds and measured CH the following day, but it was still 170. I repeated the test and got the same result. The next day I added the same amount again, and the test showed 180. (It didn't look like I was getting false endpoints but I did another test and added five drops of R-0012 first but the result was the same.) Yesterday I added the remaining product (four pounds) and today's test still showed 180.

I don't think I'm going to buy this again.

Latest test results:
FC: 6.0
CC: 0.0
pH: 7.7
TA: 80
CH: 180
CYA: 50
