CH keeps rising

All summer my CH has been around 350 or so. All of a sudden it jumps to between 465 and 496. Consistent like this for a few weeks. Nothing has really changed, except the water temps have dropped with the cooler weather. Based on my other numbers it is still balanced, but when it warms up again it will be hard to keep it balanced. I am planning to run the pool all winter as it has a spa. Should I just wait and see how it does over the winter or try and get the CH down now? I am on a well, and if I use the water that comes from the filter it is close to 0 in CH. What would cause a jump in CH? I havent added anything. Thanks.

I have to ask - how did you get that CH reading? I know of no test that can provide a result of 465 or 496.

Do you have your own test kit? If not - you need a proper one. See Pool School - Test Kits Compared

As far as the CH being elevated. Not really. Just manage your CSI. I manage mine up to 1000 ppm CH.

Take care.

Thanks for the reply, I am using a Lamotte ColorQ pro 7. I bought it before I found this site. I have bought a couple of TFP tests to double check (CYA) and the Lamotte seems pretty accurate.

My PH seems to like to migrate to about 7.8. It likes it there. To manage my CSI with an elevated CH, I have to keep the PH closer 7.4, when temps are higher. That was tough to do during the summer. I went through a lot of acid. ALk runs around 75. Since the pool is new, I am hoping acid demand will taper off soon.
