Cartridge Filter

Hi,
Is it terrible to pour a little bit of DE in the skimmer if I have a cartridge filter (4 cartridges inside the housing). A pool tech stated it will help if I pour a small amount (half of scoop; scoop he uses for other DE filters).

I wouldn't. Cartridge filters filter pretty well without DE and DE will just clog it up faster and you may not be able to remove all of it.

My question is why??? What problem do you have that a half scoop of DE will fix?

I too would not even think about adding DE to my 4-cartridge filter...

Yes! Terrible Idea! If you had a sand filter, perhaps, but not a cartridge.

The pool tech may have been asleep in class or into the sauce while he was learning about filters.

Remember once upon a time Pentair recommended adding DE to their cartridge filters. Half a pound for every 100 square feet of cartridge. But you will obviously have to clean the mess out of the carts once it's done its job. See my old post below.
