Cartridge filter insertion loss

I currently have a single 200 sq ft cartridge filter that will be upgraded to a four cartridge filter, Hayward 4030 or equivalent.

Wondering how much restriction there is in the system with a single versus a four cartridge unit? Where we live there is a lot of trees/pollen/debris. Would I see much improvement in flow with a larger filter?

Initially, with a new cartridge, you might not see much difference in flow at the same pump rpm. There is more to flow than the size (dirt-holding capacity) of the filter. The pressure reading should be less as there is less internal restriction, but the water still has to go through the rest of the plumbing. You will have good flow longer as the filter will take longer to fill enough to slow the water. You will clean less often and it will be easier to clean if you run your pump at slower speeds. With a large filter and slow speed you may see 0 pressure in the filter and have good flow. Best of both worlds. Depending on what gets into your pool you may see little or no increase in pressure and only clean once a year, because you should.

K,

Just for reference...

I have a 3 HP IntelliFlo, that I run at about 1200 RPM.. At that speed my filter pressure is less than 2 lbs. using a 30 lb. gauge. And, my cartridges are over 7 years old.. At that speed, I have plenty of flow to turn on my salt cell, and run two skimmers.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I figured when both new (clean) not a lot of difference but with the smaller one it would restrict the flow much sooner in the environment we are in.

I have a 2.7 and during the day when the water becomes more unsettled It doesn't seem like the skimmers work that well. Sometimes I will see things float by close to the opening and keep going even when the pump is turned up. During the night, I cut back to about 1900 and it seems to do well. I would say that most of the winds come from the side that skimmers are on. When the poolhouse is in place, it may reduce some of that wind.

I don't know how dirty the current filter is but with all the pollen, tassels, etc, it's probably got a lot of stuff in it. I could clean but waiting for the builder to replace the filter.
