Can’t recommend Cirrcupool anymore

For those that are considering switching to salt.…

We became new pool owners in April of 2014. That led me to this page trying to learn everything I could about pools. What to do….What not to do….etc. We tried using pucks, powders, and liquid chlorine, but just weren’t happy. There had to be a better way. Then I started reading about salt water chlorine generators. I was sold. Now on to research SWCG’s. Our pool is big, and that limited our options. Cirrcupool had a unit that seemed to fit the bill. The SJ55 advertised a higher chlorine production than most others. (The RJ60 wasnt available yet) So we bought one. Installation was a piece of cake. For 4 years we had chlorine with little to no work. Then we started having chlorine production issues. That saga is documented in this thread.

To make a long story short…. Cirrcupool won’t honor their warranty. Somehow half of the plates in the the cell corroded away, while the other half of the plates looks brand new. But somehow it’s my fault. Bad water chemistry blah blah blah.

Instead of buying an entire new unit, I decided to buy a new cell from cirrcIpool. One of the pluses of the SJ was it’s high chlorine production. (2.3 pounds per day) The new cell that I received was labeled. (1.8 pounds per day) I called them and asked. I was told that the label doesn’t mean anything, and that the cell is compatible with my unit. IT IS NOT! It physically fits, but doesn’t produce what the old cell did.

With the old cell I could run it on 50% during the summer. New cell I find that I am having to run 75% with an occasional bump to 100% just to keep up. In the short term, this is no big deal, but this cell (that I paid full price for) will wear out much quicker. Cirrcupool is still blaming me and my water.

Just thought I would share.…

Can you share info about your water? Results from your TF100 test kit, and also the pH and stalt concentration of your water. I don't know Circupool but Pentair is particularly vocal in their cautions about pH.

Cirrcupool claims to be, but cannot explain why 4 plates look new, and 3 plates are completely corroded away. That, and the same water chemistry and settings between old and new cell produce completely different results. 🙂

I think you got the SJ45 cell instead of the SJ 55 cell..

They only have the SJ40 and the SJ 55 now...
CircuPool SJ-40 Replacement Salt Cell | Discount Salt Pool = 1.6 pounds per day
The SJ 45 would have been at about = 1.8 pounds per day
CircuPool SJ-55 Replacement Salt Cell | Discount Salt Pool = 2.3 pounds per day

I can say my old SJ 45 cell lasted 7 years with no issue, the last year I had to run more hours... going from an SJ 55 to a SJ 45 you will have to run a little longer per day... probably about 2 or 3 hours but that is a guess...

I have no idea why they did not do the warranty, I am not part of them.. There is no way every single one of any companies widget will work 100% of the time.. I am very sorry it happened to you.. And then to boot you get a lower level salt cell... On that, did you actually buy the SJ55?? If so they need to send the SJ55 cell and not a 45 cell.....

As of September of last year, I had run the new cell (the one that is too small) only for one summer. (2021) Last fall I took the cell out of its housing for winter like I always do. I went to install it today preparing for the upcoming summer. When I took it out of its box, one of the seven plates fell on the floor. This plate is nearly corroded all the way thru. The other six plates look new. I am convinced that the problem is in the power supply… not the cell. All I get from Circupool is the same ole bad water chemistry excuse.

Thankyou for reading my rant.

there is no way chemistry can kill 1 plate and the 6 others are just fine... did you send them pictures?

That is disappointing... ☹️

They do have pictures. 🤷‍♂️
3 blades are all attached to one electrode. 4 blades are attached to the other electrode. The bad blade is on the 3 side.
The original cell was wired the same way. (3 and 4) The original cell had the problems on the 3 side also.
Im starting to wonder if the problem is in the power supply. Unfortunately it is no longer under warranty, so no use in sending it back to them.
This is why I “might” be shopping for another entire unit.
Thankyou-

It is a shame you couldn’t prove the power supply was faulty while still under warranty. So they aren’t covering this new cell either?

Until last year, I had a Calimar Platinum Series 40K System...

Look familiar? This is a 5-plate version, so I suspect it's equivalent to the Circupool Gen 1 SJ-40 model (1.35 lbs. per/day). It was produced by SGS Chlorinators who sold it as the SGS Wave Series. I suspect the Gen 1 versions of the SJ Series were made my SGS as well. SGS went out of business a few years ago, around the same time Circupool changed the design of the SJ-Series. The Calimar is still being marketed for $625, probably old stock.

I got rid of mine because of the design. At slow VS speeds, the upper portion of the cell would fill with gas, exposing the tops of the cells. The only way to keep air out of the cell was to run at higher speeds. FC production was inconsistent and I was concerned about the running the SWG with exposed plates. I installed an RJ-45+ in July of last year, and it's been doing fine. Too soon to comment on longevity.

I don't blame you for losing confidence in Circupool. There used to be a rep on the forum that responded to inquiries, but haven't seen him around despite being pinged a few times.

Perhaps knowing the SJ Series was likely manufactured elsewhere will provide some confidence in looking the company's current versions. From previous posts, I know Circupool has done the right thing by replacing faulty units with upgraded products at no extra cost. Perhaps you can get someone's ear at Circupool and negotiate a discount on an RJ-60+?

Just my 2 cents...best of luck!

My SJ 45/40 system lasted 7 years and was a rockstar, I loved it.. I ran mine on low speed and it would fill the entire tube with water.. I did not have a VS pump while I had the SJ.. The Calimar and SJ were the same exact product.. :)

There is no way any kind of water could do that much damage to a properly made blade... I could see it doing that if it were in an acid bath for 2 months.. The first picture is the other blades in the set with nothing wrong with them??
