Can’t figure out why I keep getting Super high pH?

About 2 weeks ago I changed out our filter sand, I could not keep
dirt from settling on the bottom every day, after the media change I SLAMed the pool and every thing appeared to be perfect, no more excess dirt, crystal clear, 6-7 FC and 30-40 CYA, and 7.8 pH... I back flushed the filter and the valve mechanism broke internally so I had to manual alight valves to recirculate, (I live in the country and have to wait for new valve) the water continually became more and more cloudy so I kept adding bleach to maintain 6-7 FC and when it started to turn a little green I added 3lbs of dochlor, but from yesterday and into today my pool is now lime green, FC is at 4 but my pH has sky rocketed, on the reagent test it doesn’t match anything it almost purple it’s so high, (well over an 8) just wondering what could have caused the sudden and drastic change?

Your PH will change daily and keeping it within a middle range is what I always recommend. Your PH could have changed for many reasons, one being the addition of liquid chlorine. Remember that your PH will rise with liquid and as the chlorine burns off, your PH will drop down to normal. Assuming this is how you dose your pool daily. Stop adding Dichlor, Trichlor, using tablets, etc. I do not have enough information to guide you properly.

In addition, taking good notes is the only way you will understand your pool. My PH stabilized with the CYA being increased after the SWG conversion. So there are a lot of moving factors. For one, test PH in the a.m., before any bleach additions and after water has been moving for at least one hour. Your levels should be right around the minimum either in the a.m. or the p.m. If you add at night, then test PH right before additions. Your additions will increase your PH so if you add and then test 30 minutes or an hour + later, this is the main reason.

Please confirm that you can not filter your water, but only can circulate at this point. It is highly recommended that you purchase a DE alternative and add closer to the end of your SLAM. After 5 years, I finally added Fiber Clear (purchased on E-Bay) and only 2 cups of the powder within a few days polished the water beyond what I thought was crystal clear. The DE powder will probably last 5 seasons, but all depends on your backwashing schedule.
