Can't figure out on how to remove casings from old anchors

Got my new safety cover today (yay) and they've send me a new set of anchors. What I've had before is some kind of pop-up anchors from Meyco (I assume, since just bought a house 2 years ago). Now it seems like I can't figure out a way to get old casings out; without doing that I can't install new anchors. Any advise?

There are many tool kits available...
I did see that video, but that's not the case unfortunately as casings I have have no threads or anything. Those are older pop-up style anchors - and those casings are literally like brass tubes inserted into concrete. I can't figure out a way on how to 'hook' them to get them out. Hammer w/ flat screwdriver/, pliers of different kinds didn't quite help.

OK, old ones are pop up anchors versus the screw up type.

Try the chip and pry method on one with a lot of lubrication between the casing and the concrete. You can see the ridges on the outside that lock the body to the concrete. The lubrication will get that sliding and chipping the top should loosen the upper ridges...

With a flat head screw driver and a small maul, chisel out the concrete around the top of the anchor. In some cases, you only need to chip out on one side - then tap your screwdriver in under the lip of the anchor body and push downward. If you chip out enough of the concrete around the upper lip, you can pry the anchor out. You only need to remove 1-2 mm of concrete around the anchor, or sometimes just on one side.

Pry up the anchor with a large flathead screwdriver. Once you have chipped around the body of the anchor, and exposed the wider top ring of ridges, push down on the screwdriver to pry the anchor out of the hole. Another tip is to spray some WD-40® type of lubricant around the anchor body, after you have chipped the concrete from around the anchor, but before you start prying, to help loosen it from the hole.

9th entry:
"How can I remove old anchors from my deck?" references a #7 screw extractor.

You can remove old anchors with a little bit of work and a few tools. The least expensive option is to purchase a number 7 screw extractor from a local hardware store, and with a little bit of elbow grease they often come right out.

A faster extraction method is to purchase a Wingmaster Service Kit available online at various retailers.

This is not going to be nice... I need to do like 30+ of them. 34 I think. Maybe it's worth to leave old rusty anchors for now? ...

Thanks I did see it, however I'm not too sure how screw extractor drill piece is going to help to remove a cylinder out of concrete.

And if you get one out then see if your new anchors hold snugly in the old hole. If it does not you will end up needing to drill new holes anyway.

If the old anchors are functional and will hold the cover I would leave well enough alone.

I thought you were saying the old anchors would not work with the new cover.

The screw extractor is 1-1 3/8. It will engage the inside of the anchor, and allow you to spin it...it may expand the hole a bit while you are doing it.

The other option is to get the extractor kit. Includes a drill bit and tap. Drill the hole into the bottom of the casing, thread it, then use the extractor to pull it up.

Nobody sees them. If they work, then use them.

I would buy a new pop up and see if you can remove the pop up insert and use it in the casing you have in your deck. If that works I would replace the pop ups only.

If you want to DIY, like the video I posted, tet the 5/16-18 tap with the drill bit above, a long stainless steel 5/16-18 bolt, a 5/16-18 coupling nut, washers, a metal tube and that should work.

Do not overstress the tap when cutting the threads. Work it in slowly and use some cutting oil to lubricate it.

If you break the tap off, you won't be able to get the anchor out.

Thank you. It's going to be quite of work + I'm not too sure I can do it properly without any damage to existing holes. Maybe keeping the pop-up style anchors is the way.

That's what I'd do probably. I'll do my research but if you know, can you recommend a place who sells just pop-up heads (with no casings) at normal price? So far I've just found one place that sells 1 for $20 which is nuts.

I have screw in anchors and have not shopped for pop ups.

I assumed you would buy a complete anchor in the casing and remove the pop-up.

The pop-ups are pricey.

With the popup anchor part locked down in the casing, you should be able to do the drill, tap and pull method.

Alternatively, you can drill through the bottom of the casing and tap threads into the bottom and then use the puller.

Or, you can drill all new holes and fill in the old holes with grout.

seems like I'm keeping old rusted stuff for now :(

BTW, They are brass and brass does not rust.

I think they can be cleaned off pretty well with some lubricant and cleaner and a wire brush.

Did you do an A/B for the pool and anchors?

If not, the new anchor points will probably not line up with the old anchors and you will need to redrill all, or most, of the holes anyway.

You can core drill around the anchors and then grout the new ones in place.

You can use a big tap to tap threads directly into the casing and then use a puller.

Measure the exact inside diameter of the brass casing and then use that as the drill size to select the correct tap size.

For example, if the ID is 0.6562", use a 3/4-10 tap and a 3/4-10 bolt to pull out the casing.

If you do a core drill around the anchor about 2 mm deep before pulling, it reduces spalling, but it might make the anchor too loose.

When choosing a tube for the puller, make sure that the anchor fits perfectly inside the tube to reduce concrete spalling.
