Can I add CYA using pucks?

Hi! I am in the process of slamming my pool. I need to run out and get some more chlorine, but before I do that, I wanted to ask a question.

After much frustration due to rainy days and a lack of confidence, I finally feel that My CYA number is 40.

I feel like I'm using a LOT of chlorine (even for a SLAM) and am wondering if I should raise my CYA a bit more? The pool has no shade so it's in full sun all day.

And, if so, can I use some of these pucks I have left from the beginning of the season last year (before the big switch!) to add stabilizer? Can I use both pucks and liquid chlorine at the same time, and finally I'm not sure I can figure out the amount of pucks I need even with the pool calculator, if it's even possible.

Thanks so much for your time!

You can use pucks if you wish. Be mindful that as the CYA increases so will the new FC SLAM level as noted on the FC/CYA Levels. Pucks should be in a floater or tab feeder. You can add liquid chlorine at any time, just not next to the tabs.

You can do it, but don't do it while in the SLAM. Raising CYA during the SLAM will only increase your need for chlorine.

Each puck in your 8,600 gallon pool wil raise the CYA by 3.9, so your CYA will go up quickly.

So maybe I should wait to use the bucks for my beach trip next week? And keep the CYA low while I'm slamming?

I tried to figure out how much chlorine each puck (1" Trichlor) would add on the pool calculator but it just tells me the weight in oz. Does this mean I need to weigh the pucks?

for my 3 inch pucks, I use it as 8oz when selecting Trichlor on the chemical list. This indicates how much pH and FC will be affected by each puck you add.
The only issue with pucks is that it takes a long time to release the CYA so it will not have immediate effect.

Also, increasing CYA now while in SLAM process will require you to add more LC to a higher FC level. Best to raise CYA after you finish the SLAM

@Wendy3tkl I read that 1" trichlor tablets each weigh 0.5 ozs and as stated earlier, a 3 inch puck is 8 ozs each.
I don't have 1 inch pucks but that is what I found in the description on 2 different products from pool stores selling trichlor pucks. So 2 tablets are 1 oz - you can use this data to put in Pool Math to calculate effect of adding.

Oh thank you so much!! That's is so helpful!! 🙏

I passed my OCLT this morning and my SLAM is over!!💃

I leave for vacation this Monday. My plan is to leave my CYA where it's at for now. Right before I leave, I will raise my FC to shock level with LC and use pucks to raise CYA to 50 while I'm gone (five days.) I will dose in the morning on day 1 and be back to dose in the evening on day 5.

My question is, do I figure out the required FC to reach shock level based on my current CYA, or my projected CYA after adding the pucks? Thanks!

My pool math "Effects of Adding" only offers the options of grams or kilograms. 🤷‍♀️

Fantastic! Well done! :goodjob: Project your future SLAM FC level base don the current CYA. Take another look in the Effects of Adding section and info about your pool. There should be a drop-down that allows you to select US measurements (gallons, cups, etc).

Thank you! I was worried I wouldn't be finished before I had to leave. 😅

I checked on pool math where I could convert to US measurements. It wasn't under settings and the drop down menu only offers grams and kilograms for me.

Thats weird. There is no master setting, it is just the drop down menus. You may want to log off then log back in.

Double check the zip code for your pool set up. That shouldn't affect the unit menus but best to check that as well.

I went to the symbol that was settings, to give it a try bc nothing else was working. My zip code is correct. Maybe I'm just going to have to use a conversion table and try to figure it out or see if someone can help me bc I'm very bad at math.

Or maybe I will just fill the floater with as many pucks as I can, bc there is no way I'm going to be able to figure this out without the correct units. I guess it's better to have too much chlorine than too little. I hate to lose sight of my CYA though. 😞

Just a thought, is your pool information setup in gallons?

Is this with a 3 inch puck? So, my 1 inch pucks would raise my CYA by 1.3 each?
Okay NVM. If a 3 inch puck is 8oz and a 1 inch puck is .5 oz then my math dividing the 3.9 into 3 to find the effects of adding CYA of my 1 inch tabs won't work. My math is good enough to figure out that my math is wrong, at least 😂
