I have a pool with significant staining. I’m currently doing an absorbic acid treatment and some stains are reducing but others won’t budget. I’m planning to drain the pool after the AA treatment. Can I acid wash some of the residual stains while the pool is draining? If so do I need to raise the pH of the residual water while I’m doing it to neutralize the water on the way out? Or will it be diluted enough since I’m doing it while there’s water still in the pool and draining? Is this a dumb idea? Or should I just drain, acid wash, pump out, and refill? Thanks for your perspective!

Acid washing a pool is discouraged. It reduces the life of the plaster significantly.

Are the stains possibly copper?

Copper staining is attempted to be removed using sulfamic acid. The pool is then drained to remove the copper and the long term effects of sulfamic acid in the pool.

Amazing, thank you for that information. Doesn't look like pool store sells it but Home Depot sells it under a building product here. Will that work? Also, what's the application method? Can I apply it while drained or apply while pool is full and then drain?

For widespread staining you can also try a no drain acid bath as shown here, The Zero Alkalinity Acid Treatment.

I have only got results by using the stain removers with the pool full. You have to have your pH, and alky in range. I always try to lower both first. Then add my stain remover and scrub that stains very good for a few days with a steel wire brush.

You could do a diluted solution of acid while the water drops. But I can tell you it is very hard to do even a mild acid wash and get even results that way. Do it with or without water in the pool, that's kind of a rule. If you try that as the pool drains you'll have 15 different rings of colors and shades all the way down to where you stoped draining your pool.
