Ive searched through the forums…and I would think that this is possible….To calculate volume of pool (gallons) by adding one bag of salt.

Is it? If so, can someone provide the formula?

Thanks!

014,

In theory yes, but in practice no.

One bag of salt will result in a salt increase of 171 ppm in a 28K pool, 177, in a 27K pool, and 184, in a 26K pool.

The problem is being able to test to that fine of a level. The Taylor salt test reads in 200 ppm increments.

Also, keep in mind that you need to know the actual salt level in the water before you add the 1 bag of salt.

Thanks,

Jim R.

You can Try Dialing volume in a little better with acid additions & subsequent results comparing them with PoolMath
Doing it with liquid chlorine additions/results has a few too many variables since it can degrade in potency etc. although it may get you close enough.

Watching the results of chemical additions ovr a long eriod of time will help narrow down the volume, but a one time test won't do it. As everyone has pointed out, chemical strengths, the specificity of each of the tests and even teh volume changes. Depending on the size/shape of the pool 1" up or down of the water could change the volume by 500 gallons or more. While the target is usually the middle of the skimmer, with rain or evaporation water levels can go up or down several inches.

This is interesting I did not know the 200ppm increments. I just added two bags yesterday. I started at 2000 with the Taylor kits and I am not getting 2600 about 12 hours later. Thinking 300ppm per bag. I was hoping this would dial in my volume as well. I calculated just over 15K gallons but feel I could be closer to 18k gallons.

Effects of adding chemicals: salt

15000 | from 2000 to 2600 = 75lbs
18000 | from 2000 to 2600 = 90lbs

Most salt tests have an error rate of up to 400ppm. You are close. Like said above, you'll narrow it down.
