My pool installed had told me I really don't need any hardness or calcium at all since the pool is fiberglass, does this make sense. His reasoning was there is no calcium in the shell or any components for the water to pull from.

That is true, to a point. We do know that very low calcium water can result in Cobalt staining, maybe.
