I still have 6 bags of calcium hypochlorite that I would like to use within the next 3 months, and I was wondering what are the effects on PH? My Calcium level is only 150, so I'm not worried about that.
Use the Old PoolMath Webpage link below and scroll down to "Effects of adding chemicals" to calculate chemistry changes. Check the package for the correct percentage. Cal-hypo has no effect on pH.
Thank you very much. Yes I was wondering if it was very minimally, but if after a lot of usage, you would notice a big change in PH. My guess is 6 bags probably won't change PH more than .1 or .2 at the most.
The real effect will be on your CH that will increase by 14-20ppm (depending on cal-hypo concentration). Starting with a CH of 150ppm you should be fine.
The effect of calcium hypochlorite on pH is pretty much the same as the effect of liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) on pH: When adding a hypochlorite source of chlorine to the pool then pH will rise. When that chlorine has done its job by killing germs, oxidising stuff and getting lost to UV, pH will be more or less back to where it started (apart from pH drift in the meantime due to CO2 outgassing and a very small pH rise due to excess lye in liquid chlorine).
The net effect of hypochlorite sources of chlorine while maintaining a more or less constant FC level is zero.
