As many know, Leslies sells 45 pounds for $75 bucks

Can I instead buy those 50 pound calcium chloride ice melts that sell for around $20?

If so, can someone recommend any brands that are trustworthy please

Check MSDS. Many calcium products have lots of fillers/salts that you do not want.

but how do i find out if my pool is vinyl or plaster?

Feel the surface. If slick, like plastic, it is vinyl. If sort of rough, like concrete, it is plaster.
