I need to add 30lb of calcium chloride to try to get to 300ppm. This is because my csi is to low -.72 see my pool math logs.

How many lbs may I add at a time without causing cloudy effect or worse in the pool?

There is no reason to add calcium to your pool. No need to track CSI for a vinyl pool.
Another tfp member made the following comment- - For a SWG, the CSI should be kept in the 0.00 to -0.30 range to minimize scaling in the SWG.

Is this a reason that I should raise my ch closer to 300ppm? Currently it is at 120ppm. My csi is about -72

That CSI range is for a plaster pool. If CSI is too low IN A PLASTER POOL it can leach calcium out of the plaster/pebble surface.

You have vinyl, so that isn't an issue for you.

@gnhand I am local to you with vinyl and whenever I look up my CSI for funsies it's very low like -1.5. As my calcium gets closer to zero with no need to replenish it, it'll be in the -2s. It's never once mattered for me.

I’ll keep that in mind for the future. But I thought it couldn’t hurt to raise ch to around 200ppm so the csi will be around-.3 or -.2. (note calcium chloride was added just before I read your comment) . And it was mentioned in a prior thread that if csi was kept around that range it could minimize scaling in the SWG . In addition I have a heat exchanger tied into my oil burner. I figured that I don’t want any chemical imbalance that might affect the heat exchanger or associated copper piping (5 or 6 feet at most). I guess my thinking is just over thinking. Based on Mcnauss, yourself and a few others I will not worry anymore about csi or ch !!

Based on your oil fired heater I’d advise increasing CH to 200 to assist in the formation of a thin layer of scale for protection of the heat exchanger. Truly high CH and/or low PH are more detrimental to a heating system, but bumping it won’t hurt you and IMO would be a conservative approach. If you had a HP the advice would be different. @JoyfulNoise provides a detailed explanation here in post #11.
