It means to make some more space in between the pvc pipes by using elbow or 45º to make room for the new jandy valves. Personally i dont think you need it, but order them and measure if they fit with the space you have now.

I have a question. Do you have a spa? Where does the 3 return pipes go to?

I don’t understand the “spreading out” the valves comment. Can someone clarify?

The jandy valve is somewhat bulky and may be cumbersome with the spacing you have between the pipes now. The two outer pipes would go away from the center pipe with fitings to accomadate the larger spacing.

I recently had the same problem with the identical setup as you. I just cut the whole thing out as high as I could from the ground piping and rebuilt it all the way to the pump (cell in your case). The valves and fittings should be less than $50. I used these:

So here is my take on the work you need if you want to keep the same configuration, and a little more than 50 bucks.



Black is a Jandy. neverlube 2way. valve
Blue is a Jandy neverlube 3way valve
Green is a Pentair union for your IC SWG
Yellow is a screw in union
You are also going to need 5 coupler, 7 elbows, 2 T, all in PVC sch 40
some glue and a few. feet of pipe.

I was thinking this exact same thing and realized that valve is accessing plumbing that was put in for a water slide at some point in the future. So, embarrassingly enough, I could technically cut that valve out and cap it off until I decide to get a slide.

I did order the stuff though along with a new filter valve as well. The plumbing all looks like it is screwed on, so it should be reusable if I can get past whatever was used as thread sealer.

Those valves don't last and break at the worst time. Once he's at it spend for the gold standard or don't do it.

Maybe...these matched my old ones which lasted over 10 years and I don't expect to live in this house for another 10 years, so for $10 bucks per valve, it's not really a huge deal for me.

In the pic of the filter valve above, you can see caulk like material used in the screw in connectors. It isn’t coming loose easily...could that be some kind of glue?

Doesn't look like glue or silicone caulk to me. I'd say thread sealer or pipe dope. It's going to hang on pretty tight as gooey as it looks. But it will let go with a big enough pair of channel-locks.
