first summer with pool. Recently replaced cartridge filter as it was toast after a few months of debris from trees and landscape guys and us having to leave uncovered to get chlorine down.

Last few months, I’ve had my numbers good and all was going well. I started to notice a kind of “mildew” smell as I would exitbthe pool? Like an old wet towel?

So today, weather was good and I decided to clean the salt cell for first time and rinse off cartridge filter. When I got filter out I was surprised to see it was brownish?!?! I took a hose to it and a lot of the brown would rinse off, but honestly my hose pressure is weak.

I did fill with well water once and it is notorious for iron. I bout one of those filters you connect to end of hose and used that 80% of the time. Not sure If it filters iron well or not.

so do I toss the filter again and start with new one?

How often is normal to change cartridge filter one I become a pro? Once or twice a year?

what is proper way to clean? My guy says just rinse off with hose and put it back. I’ve read some soaking in tsp overnight or dishwashing soap.

Suggestions?

do you think it’s iron? What to do now?

Not sure whats going on with your water and filters but some folks with better experience than me will be along soon. What chemicals are you using? Not so sure dishwashing soap is a good idea but look forward to see what others say. What test kit are you using? Take a look at these links as refresher...

I'm not sure this is official, but I clean my filter:

*** 13 gal kitchen trash can filled with 1 cup of laundry detergent and 1 cup of bleach and water.

*** Put the cartridge in and agitate for a minute and let it soak for 1/2 hour.

*** Turn it over and do the same thing.

*** With a decent spray nozzle, rinse down all the pleats a couple of times.

It comes out VERY clean looking. I replace mine (maybe every 2-3 years) when the band around the pleats break or it clogs up faster than I'd expect .
