Bromine confusion

Are you using test strips? Or some other sort of combined bromine / chlorine test?

One of the experts will be along to confirm but I do believe that chlorine affects a bromine test and vice versa. You will get a false result for bromine simply by having chlorine

^^^ this

If you have never added bromine, then there shouldn't be bromine in the pool.

Chlorine and bromine tests are exactly the same thing, just a different scale. The chemistry in the test can't distinguish between the two.

I'm in the process of SLAMing my pool and my Bromine levels are very high. I added liquid chlorine to my pool and have never used bromine. This is my first time caring for a pool and I'm so confused. Please help!
If you’re trying to SLAM the pool without one of the two Taylor test kits, you’ll need one of them to do so accurately.

You need a taylor k2006c or tf100/pro to do the SLAM Process. As the fas/dpd test is needed. Test Kits Compared

If you have never used bromine then you don’t have any.
Most OTO tests (yellow drops) have marks on one side for bromine & on the other side for chlorine which is what I think you may be using. This doesn’t mean you have bromine as mentioned above.
The Oto test is not sufficient for slam as it only reads total chlorine (fc+cc) up to 5ppm & doesn’t differentiate between the two.

I was trying to get by with using strips, but it doesn't look like that's going to work 🤦‍♀️ I just ordered the TF-100 test kits. Should I just try to maintain a normal chlorine range until it gets here? Fortunately I just started SLAMing last night so I've only wasted about $10 at this point.

Just add 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine to the pool each day to keep things from getting worse until you have some good data. Use PoolMath to calculate amounts.

tell us more about your pool- volume, type equipment etc.

Thank you so much for your help. I just added my signature. Does that work or should i add any other details?

That’s fine 👍🏻 add your test kit info too.
I will also suggest that you remove the filter balls & just use normal #20 filter sand.
That is what the sand filter is designed to use. You can get this done while waiting on your kit to arrive.
If you need to filter smaller particles then you can always add a little de to the sand filter like this whenever needed.

The pool I'm caring for is actually my Mom's, we're neighbors, so it's fairly convenient. She decided on the filter balls and can be a little stubborn when it comes to change. I've googled filter balls vs sand and I can't find anything that says sand is better. What makes you say I should change to sand? I'll need a compelling argument to convince her to change lol.

First time I heard about "filter balls". No idea if they work. Main issue I have with them is that this is another example where an industry tries to replace a perfectly good natural product (sand) with an artificial one (plastic). Someone found another way to upsell a really cheap product. All it does is creating money (presumably lots of it) for a few people and totally avoidable micro plastics for everyone else to deal with.

Many people have trouble getting the gunk out of them as backwashing really isn’t very effective & need to remove them. Google search results
Just trying to save you from a unnecessarily prolonged slam process.

I never thought about it that way, but you're totally right.

I see what you're saying. Backwashing didn't help filter pressure so I cleaned them manually. It was disgusting and somewhat time consuming. 🤮
Be prepared to have to continue to do that with them throughout the SLAM Process
