I have an new pool, roughly 5212 gallons with a SWG (Intex)
My question is do I need to create my own FC first before starting up the SWG so it doesn't have to work as hard?
or get my CYA levels to 70 min (recommended for salt based on other threads I have found) and start the SWG according to its instructions?
Also, according to the guide with the SWG, it states that the CYA levels should be 30ppm.
And it mentions to keep a check on the copper levels, how often should I be doing this?
Lastly, complete newbie here so please be kind.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey there, welcome to TFP :)

Yes, you're correct. You want to have your FC at your desired level the turn the SWG on to *maintain* that level. The SWG works too slowly to take the water up from zero to x amount before algae would move in.

If you live in a hot clime (which if you put your locale in the space to the left, I'd know?) you want to take your CYA up to about 70 ppm to see if that holds your FC stable. FC/CYA Levels

Please review Pool School for more guidelines to levels and other info. Start here: ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry

Do you have an appropriate test kit yet? TF-100 is preferred --> www,.tftestkits.net or the K-2006C

My apologies, I have updated my info. I am in a hot climate, not too far from you actually.
I have taken the pool chemistry classes on here. I am just trying to solidify my understanding.
I am starting the install tomorrow so I just wanted to be sure of the steps first, since this is my first time.

Aside from bleach (which is a little harder to find with the climate of COVID right now) what are your other recommendations for FC starting out. I will utilize the tables for CYA and disregard my filter manufacturers recommendations within their manual.

Thank you for the help so far.

You can use Liquid Chlorine from Walmart in the pool section. It is 10% chlorine. Bring your FC upto and maintain it at 5ppm while you are adjusting your CYA level. Then refer to the CYA/FC Ratio chart to manage your chlorine level.
You might want to download the Pool Math app to help you log your results. It will give suggestions on how much chemicals to add too.
