Bottom drain

Why do you want to install a MD? They really don't provide much benefit but do add some risks (entrapment & leaks).

I have a MD but basically have shut it off.

MDs are pretty useless for cleaning. The worst thing you can do is push a lot of debris towards one. They can easily clog. Also, they don't really pull much dirt in. Only about 1" around the drain. Spend your money on something else of value.

Okay, I may as well pile on.

I have a working main drain, but you wouldn't know it. Even set to full drain, one has to make a perfect shot to brush any debris into the drain so that it gets whisked away. Usually it just passes right over the grate. The anti-entrapment cover works--- you can't feel any suction down there when diving and trying to. The swirling toilet bowl effect just doesn't happen.

If it's about draining the pool, why? You have an above ground so you can siphon through the vacuum hose without any pump at all.

Buy a robot with the money.
