Blocked Vacuum Pipe

I suspect my behind the liner drain line is blocked. Water just won't drain out after a heavy rain. Anybody know how to check and unblock the line? Everything I've read calls for high pressure CO2 or a drain king. But both of those will tear the liner where the vacuum pipe meets the pool floor.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Blocked Vaccuum Pipe

I'm afraid I don't understand.

An overflow will be up near the top of the pool. A main drain will be in the floor. Which one are we talking about?

A main drain should be plumbed either to a valve by the pump or to the bottom of the skimmer. If you don't see a valve in the suction line (the pipe going into the pump basket) then pull out the skimmer basket and look for a flying-saucer-looking thing and two holes beneath it.

How close are your well points to the pool wall? There should be a layer of crushed rock at the bottom of that well point.

Any well point/ground water drain system I have seen is pretty much a French Drain at the bottom of the pool. Simply running a pipe up to the liner will only remove water from that one spot.

Do you have any build plans from the construction of the pool? I wouldn't attempt anything until you can confirm the construction of this drain.

It could have sucked up some dirt or stones. The ways I know to clear a pipe would not be good to use behind a liner. I would contact the builder and see if they have someone who can come troubleshoot the problem.

Where is "here" by the way? It helps for us to know the general area where your pool is located to make our recommendations.

No pics. I think it's blocked because there is water behind the liner(may have a leak) and it won't drain via the dedicated line. That line has always taken care of any water over the years.

sounds like they dual purposed your pool pump to also pump water from behind your liner... Do you have to switch a lever/jandy valve to use that drain? I have only seen pictures of French drains done to drain the water, but they all have pumps connected that have a water float and turn on when the water level rises..

We really need you to upload some pictures to get a better understanding of what you have going on..

I hope this helps :)

Just wanted to give an update on this. We ran a drain king on the behind the liner drain and it was not blocked. I had a leak detection company take a look and they found a leak at the pool light. There was a crack in the conduit at the back of the light niche that was repaired with epoxy. I imagine the water was leaking into the ground and then behind the liner, causing the water to be unable to self drain back into the ground because of the constant flow of water back into the ground from the pool light. Kind of a never ending cycle.

I still thought the behind the liner drain would get to the water, but I think it was kind of "stuck" in place at the deep end and wasn't being pushed to the drain at the shallow end, as it normally does.
