I started brushing my pool with stainless steel brush (due to the black algae) and adding liquid chlorine this afternoon. All the black algae spots were removed from the plaster. Probably, I should continue brushing for the next several days even though all the spots have been removed, should I? I am also wondering if I should clean my cartridge filter as well? Thanks.

It wouldn't hurt. But your algae will go away after a successful slam and you'll only have dead algae in the filter.

Probably as important as continued brushing a time or two is to keep your chlorine maybe 50% higher than normal for a few days. That should get rid of any algae that is lingering.
