I had another PB over today to discuss replastering our pool (Quartzscape) and described the altered plaster application procedures and bicarb startup outlined by OnBalance. Right away he said the biggest problem would be that doing anything other than following Quartzscape's instructions would void the manufacturers warranty. But then he said the only thing the warranty covers is the finish completely coming off the wall and he's only seen that twice, ever, so maybe no big deal. I'd welcome thoughts about this. Is the bicarb startup worth giving up the warranty against an unlikely problem? Thanks.

Read the manufacturer’s warranty carefully and look at what they actually cover.

It is not much and you are unlikely to get defective material from them. And then you have to prove the material was defective. Good luck.

The manufacturer is going to try to find fault with whatever you do unless the failure is so obviously their mistake. You’d get push back even if the applicator followed their process to the letter … doing the Bicarb Startup simply lets them off the hook easier. The biggest problems with plaster installations are almost always poor workmanship which the manufacturer has nothing to do with. So voiding their warranty likely will never matter.

It’s far more important to choose a high quality contractor that can prove their skills with great references and newly finished projects that you can go see. The brand or color of the plaster rarely matters.

The same PB said they use Startup Tech. This product appears to have the same goals as the bicarb startup. The PB said they see almost no plaster dust. Maybe this would be a good alternative.
