Best way to use vacuum in skimmer

Which is the better way to use a Hayward through wall skimmer in an above ground pool when you're hooking up a vacuum? Use the suction plate that comes with the skimmer or shove the hose down the skimmer's throat?

I just got to thinking about that...

Skimmer player then I put a few rocks on it to keep it down so I don't lose prime if I mess up

If you use the skimmer plate, the basket will catch the larger debris. Without it, debris will go straight to the filter.

Me? I stick it down in the skimmer hold after I made SURE it would not go all the way in. The skimmer plate and I did not get along at all.................The pump basket catches any big stuff I find. Well that is how I used to do it before I got my robot! LOVE my robot!!!

I did the same as Kim. Never could get a skimmer plate to work right!

Yes, Kim's right...the pump basket will keep larger debris out of the filter.
