just put up a new above ground pool..a few weeks ago and the levels was good ..checked today and now pretty high..using test strips..getting test kit soon..what would cause this to rise..and should i check again tomorrow.....any info would be great
pH is going to rise naturally over time and with a bunch of swimmers splashing. It gets lowered with acid. When it gets lowered, TA also goes down a little. The pH will go back up eventually, the TA will not, unless you add refill water that is higher TA than what is in the pool.
I would go easy on the adjustments, since you're mostly working blind with those test strips.
On the test kit I hope you get the TFP-100 or Taylor K-2006C, either one is invaluable for testing and self pool maintenance. Do look at all the pool school articles and absorb them, they are extremely helpful. I would personally wait until your test kit arrives so that you get concrete numbers, and in the meantime continue to chlorinate (assuming you have CYA/stabilizer already added). To reduce TA see this pool school article:
My fill water (well) has a TA of about 160 and the pH would increase very rapidly day to day. I then set about reducing it according to that article over a couple of weeks (it was not a priority, since it was ok to swim). By sequentially adding acid (or pH down/dry acid if you don't want to handle muriatic acid) and then aerating the water (by turning the return eye up to push the jet through the surface of the water; this was before I added a fountain for fun - do plumb with PVC-40 and make a fountain!), I set my TA level to 60 and the pH does not drift up - not at all, at least over 2 weeks - and that is with the home made fountain running very frequently.
i will wait till kit comes before making any major adj .....thanks for all the reply's...also ive been shocking once a week...right now in using the floating thingy with the chlorine pucks inside...ive been reading here that nobody likes the pucks for chlorine ..what else could i use...it seems to be working ok so far...
