I'm not sure why only having a SWG would keep you from having to maintain your alkalinity level. Baking soda isn't just for adjusting pH, its for maintaining total alkalinity. They are two different things.

Chemicals that lower ph also lower alkalinity. When you have a swg you’re not constantly lowering ph & driving down alk. Therefore most don’t have the frequent need for baking soda. Without the regular use of trichlor or dichlor I get my ph & alk adjusted @ opening & don’t have to touch it again. I have had the same bag of baking soda for 5 years
