Balancing through a Western Australian Winter

Hi Folks,

This will be my first time managing my own pool through the Winter in Perth. As it doesn't get very cold here the pool will stay "open" all year but we probably won't swim in it again until late September or early October.

So here are my questions:

At what water temperature should I turn off the saltwater chlorine generator? We just hit 17.3C I suspect the lowest it will go is 13 C. The manual seems to indicate it can handle 12 C.
I'm seeing some people say that the pump can be reduced to 2 hours? At what water temperature would you start doing this? Perhaps I will drop to 4 first?
If I shut off the SWG. I don't want to use trichlor pucks due to the cya so was planning to move to liquid chlorine. Is there any issue pushing the chlorine levels up so I don't have to dose as often. I'm normally at 5PPM.

Anything else to consider?

Current Levels:
FC: 5 (has been rising so I've been turning down the chlorinator)
ph: 7.6
TA: 70
CYA:70
Water Temp 17.3
Pump time: 2 x 4 hours per day = 8 hrs total per day

Kind regards,
Mike

Hi Mike and welcome to TFP.

As a fellow sandgroper I’m in the same boat as you. I’m just preparing to make the switch to liquid chlorine and turning off the SWG. Your levels look good but just remember when you do make the switch you need to maintain your FC levels as a non-SWG pool. You can just let the winter rains do their job of diluting your CYA when you drain the excess rainwater. I run my pool pump for 2 hours during winter.

Keep in mind that you need to keep your FC below 10 as your pH will read a false high if it is higher.

i leave mine running all year round
i have a lincoln which i assume reduces the current in winter
when the water gets cold it reduces down to 50 percent or so
when it is set to 95 percent
so it never actually shuts down
water gets down to 10 degrees celcius, 50 degrees farenheit

Mine will start to show up as a low conductivity reading about now although this warm autumn weather seems to be keeping things ticking over. I put in about a litre of liquid chlorine twice a week and because I know what my FC consumption will be over winter in the absence of any swimmers I’ll test for FC and pH about once a week.
Pity about Freo but the signs are good

I've wondered about this. Do you reduce the pump time? My SWG has the ability to put in a water temperature adjustment down to 12C which corrects for the conductivity issue. I've been worried about reducing the life of the SWG but it really doesn't get that cold here.
