Baja shelf depth

Hi!

I saw many discussion on baja shelf depth (baja shelf as second longer step to lay on it). I don't find that anyone is questioning how deep should it be to lay on it (mostly to seat or put chair on it). So my problem is how deep should it be to lay down on it and still have your chin out of the water (I don't need whole body under the water). I don't want it too deep because it is not it's purpose. In the sea the depth would be 11inch (so +/- 1" water regulation in the pool), but that is sea (you are a bit floating there). So I guess for all people to lay on it comfortable the depth should be no more than 10 inc (+/- 1" or even 1,5 inch of water).

Any comment please.......

I am doing mine at 18 inches.. Perfect for chairs to sit in and still have the robot clean it.. any less depth and I will have to manually clean it.. :)

I’ve owned 2 pools, one with a shallow wet deck, one with a deeper one. Current one is 18” & we love it. Going deeper gives more options IMO I.e. You have option of being able to float up onto the deck with ease, some robots will work in that depth water, you still can use the step down to the end wet deck as an intermediary ‘ankle deep’ location to sit on with butt in the water or to have feet on while using the side of the pool deck for a dry butt seating position.

Or, the typical plastic pool lounger chair, like are inexpensive & widely available here in the U.S. are placed on our wet deck when we want to be positioned like I think you’re referring to. Usually though, we & our typical guests don’t end up opting for the chairs or loungers in the water route.

Only you know you though. If whatever people like myself are telling you doesn’t seem to be what you think would work for you, than stick with your original design specifications. You decide what’s right for your pool!

This is my exact thoughts, take all suggestions and make an informed decision and go with what YOU want :)

Good conclusion.(y)

Contrarian here. Ours is currently about 9 inches; probably normally an inch or two lower, as we've had rain almost every day and the water level is right at the overflow drain. My feeling on this after 2.75 years is that I would prefer to not have it at all. It's a waste of pool area. We have never used it for other than to get to the steps on one side of the thing. Doing it over, instead of the ledge, I would have steps the full width of the current ledge. As it turns out, that's exactly why my neighbor did, and while the pool still isn't finished, I think the full width steps are going to be much more useful than a tanning ledge.

BTW, you didn't ask, but the other mistake I would correct (on our pool) is a 6 ft deep end. PB recommended 5 feet, and that would have worked out better, especially for some of the never ending maintenance that came along with the pool. Being able to stand on the bottom anywhere in the pool: priceless.

We are doing Gunite today and originally I had asked for 12 in. water, and our builder said the standard was 9. For months while waiting for permits we would measure all the pools we were in and at some point I made a note that I liked 12. After being in my parents pool after they dug for 12, I decided I wanted to be in less water, and we decided on 10 (water depth). I know I do NOT want to sit in a chair on the ledge, just kinda float and lay on it (or be on a raft floating about it haha).

I can let you know in a couple months how we like it and if I can lay on it comfortably :ROFLMAO:

I'll toss in another opinion and agree somewhat with @BowserB , I think a good thing to think about for sun shelves is if or will you have any kids in the pool frequently, and their ages. My last pool had a sun shelf, and for me, and my adult guests, no one ever used it. The exception was toddlers/children that can't swim yet- they LOVE it and spend ALL of their time there.

If you don't see the kids portion in your use case, my personal opinion would be to not have it.
