Welp... I keep adding chlorine per Pool Math and despite what I shoot for, I always come up below what my target was.

I tested last night around 5:00 PM ET and FC was 6.5
I tested about 10 mins ago (1:20 PM ET) and FC had dropped to 4.5

I added enough to get me to a 7 and plan to test in about 30 mins (just after 2 PM ET)

I can do an OCLT - not a problem at all
We've had a TON of rain - but not enough to really dilute the pool - it's got a soft solar cover on

Granted I did just backwash and rinse for the first time in a couple weeks - no substantial change to PSI prior to, just thought it would be a good time to do it while I had some free time in my day.

Did I get a bad batch of Chlorine? I am using 12.5%. Yes, I realize that it sitting in the garage during this minor heat wave is less than ideal but this is the same brand and strength of chlorine I've used all summer.

Do we think I'm lurking in a potential swamp? Hence my OCLT comment...

Logs are on my profile if you want to take a gander! Thanks!

Not sure why, in the heat of summer, when you can lose, easily 4ppm per day, you are running at 7FC. I know target is 5-7, but you always want to test and get a result in target. If you have to dose higher, so you stay in target range when you test, that is what you should do.

If you start at 7 and lose 4, you are at min. min i lava. If you start at 9-10, lose 4, then you are 5-6, still in range.

I might also suggest that you do the OCLT.

After you pass, or slam, I'd raise your CYA to 60 to lower FC demand.

Okay - so trying to think about how you're saying this...

If I know I am going to lose 3 - 4PPM, and the top of my range is 7... shoot for an 11. So that if I lose 4 PPM, I am in range?

That way no matter when I test (morning, mid-day, evening) I am "in range"

Is this that whole #TeamRunHot thing ;)

Alright - 2 PM ET Test - 15 Drops, so I'm 7.5 on FC
Pool Math says... add 18 oz of 12.5% to get to an 11 (and because I'm above 10 FC, ignore PH for this short time)

Off we go...

I'll also do an OCLT tonight just for sanity sake.
And if I pass OCLT drop in CYA to raise from 40 to 60

Remember the UV loss over the season. There's an occasional whoopsie week in there like this heat wave many of us have at the moment, but for the most part it follows the plan

3 ppm may last a week in April/May and barely 3 hours at noon in July/Aug.

Your mission is to remain free and clear above min after the sun does its thing that day. It's a moving target based upon the recent loss. (Yay frequent testing, so you'll just 'know' what it's been doing lately).

So when Indiana gets the "devil's hot" in July... and "Fourth Summer" in early September... I'll just know to "run hot"

And that explains why earlier in the season I could stay within range pretty easily - except for SLAM/Rust/Nuclear Football weeks I was having

Y'all are so smart!

Each summer, I hit a point where I'm surprised my FC isn't where I expected. And each summer, I realize that my CYA could be higher.
Then once CYA is raised, I'm shocked that my FC holds up a lot better.

Springtime lulls you into thinking you know the pool, then summer with high temps and high UV shows up...

🙋‍♂️.

Just raised my CYA on Friday for the exact same reason. I currently have round 2 soaking beacuse I didn't want to over do it adding 30 ppm.

YES! Tricky little Springtime...

Someone forgot to do the OCLT 🤦‍♀️ I’ll set a reminder tonight.

I’ll measure my CYA today when I run my other chems. And raise it by 10 20 to see if that helps with maintaining my FC.

Good news! FC stayed above range! I dosed yesterday to an 11, we landed at a 9 this morning. It’s gonna be a muggy one today 82° with 90% humidity…

Dumb question…

Should I increase my FC to “run hot” before my OCLT and use that as my starting point before measuring tomorrow? Meaning… I come out at 9 PM, measure and dose to 11…

11 is my FC start… wake up tomorrow before the sun, and measure FC… and fingers crossed for something 10/11…

You need to be free and clear from min as per the cardinal rule. After that, 7, 9 or 11 as a start doesn't matter. :)
