Automation / SWG Quote

Hello!

I'm trying to sanity check a quote to convert my pool to salt water and add automation. My last pool was a pretty basic Hayward setup, but we just bought a new house with a Pentair pump and heater so I figured building off that made the most sense.

I called around and got a few quotes. One place was offering to install an IC40 for $3400 +tax. A Jandy TruClear was about $1000 less.

A second PB I spoke to was much more detailed and gave me a quote including automation. I haven't had a pool with automation before, but the idea of being able to hit a few buttons and have the spa ready to go is enticing.

His quote was a lot more, but also included a lot more. Intellicenter load center with i5PS Personality kit, ICL Plus40 SWG, 3 Intellivalve actuators, wireless web interface, displays, and salt to start for ~$6500 all in. He would tie in the filter, pump, heater, lights, and solar heating. It seems pretty all inclusive, but trying to get part pricing online is not easy, and I'm not entirely sure if there's anything worth changing or adding while I'm getting everything done. The one thing that occured to me is to maybe get the larger Plus60 SWG - My understanding is that getting the largest cell possible pays off over time for the decreased runtime and stress. I'm -sure- my pool is not the 40,000 gallons the Plus40 is rated for, but I don't know how many gallons the pool is because I've only had it a few days and it's not a math-friendly shape. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it's under 20k though.

The $6500 is more than I expected, but that was mostly a gut sense from what posts like this I could find. 2016 prices may not be a reasonable anchor haha

Thanks for any thoughts and insight!

Rule of thumb is Pool Store cost with installation is 2X what you can buy the equipment for.

IC40 cell with power center is about $2,000. IC60 is $400 more.

IntelliCenter bundle with IC40 is about $3,000. Installation can take one or two days depending on the complexity of your existing wiring. With an IntelliCenter Load Center you should plan on new circuit breakers whose cost can add up if done right.

Your prices are not crazy for someone else installing the equipment with full warranty.

Being in Vegas you can buy from these folks and pickup at their store if you can DIY the installation…

Compute how many gallons your pool is BEFORE picking a SWG model.
If you need help with that, post specifics about dimensions and depths here.

We recommend a SWG rated for at least 2 times your pool volume.
You're in Vegas with hot summers that burn thru chlorine. Go with a SWG that is more than 2x your pool volume.

Two seasons I upgraded our pool to intellicenter w/ IC60 and have no regrets. I sourced the parts from polytec pool (right in las vegas). It can be done DIY if you're comfortable with wiring and enjoy interpreting poorly written installation instructions (Pentair). If you're anywhere remotely close to 20k gallons I'd suggest getting the IC60.

It's worth mentioning that you'll need to clean the salt cell periodically. calcium will accumulate on the plates and if you let it go too long it'll get really bad and seriously impact performance. This is the only negative to the saltwater option that I've encountered.

However, if you properly manage your CSI, you should never need to 'clean' the SWCG. I never have, and have the same fill water as the Las Vegas Valley.

It is much easier if you use softened water for make up water due to evaporation.
