We're in process of choosing a color for our automatic pool cover for 20x40 IG vinyl pool. Any advice or pros/cons for lighter or darker cover? Color preferences? I'm debating between royal blue, navy blue, tan or gray. Pictures welcome!
Thank you

I chose a color that looked as close to pool water blue as I could. We went with a medium light blue cover by Pool Cover Specialists.

I specifically didn't want it to be gray like the cement-thinking some one like a visitor who didn't know the yard late at night in the dark might mistake it for ...cement!

Didn't want any color that clashed with house. They all show dirt in their own way I believe, so no getting around that.

The color will have little to no affect on the temperature of the pool. This is strictly an aesthetic decision. First question is would you prefer to match or contrast the surrounding deck?

We have a lot of trees surrounding our pool so we went with a forest green cover. We also have a forest green hot tub cover. Seems to blend nice with the surrounding landscape.

My cover is navy blue. If I had to do it again, I think I would have chosen a lighter color because the dark color always looks dirty. I think tan or gray would hide dirt better, but when clean I do like the look of the navy.

Thank you so much for your replies! I was sold on a blue until I saw pictures of the tan and gray- but still think we will probably go with the blue. 3 shades of blue to pick from though!
Can you post pictures of your covers? faby3003 & YipeeSkippy~ I would love to see your covers if possible. Thanks!
I had read that the covers, especially darker colors, may increase the water temp too much in the later summer heat~ anyone have this experience?

This is what I mean about looking dirty.

It does seem to get the water warmer - but that is good for us - if we need it to cool of during a hot spell, we can just open the pool at night and/or run the pump at night instead of during the day. Right now we are sitting at 83° in northern California - with no heater...pool water this year has been in the upper 70's-80's for a month or so...with some cold weather in that time frame.

edit:
Our original choices were between gray (way too much gray for our yard), dark blue, or this dark green. We thought about blue since it would sort of look like pool water - however green was our choice since it matches our house better.

We have that same green cover ^^^ can tell by where that warning sticker is which I took off. It was scaring the heck out of my 5 year old son at the time for some reason.

Coverstar charcoal. Unobtrusive. Doesn't draw attention to itself.

No.

I was hoping there would be an advantage to a darker color cover but can't say that it "warms" my pool. Using the heater is the only way to get the pool comfortable for me.

I agree that you should pick a color that compliments your surroundings. I tried to match some of the wild life around my home.

Here's a picture of our tan cover, which we love.

I generally close it every night in spring and fall to keep as much heat in the water as possible and to keep leaves, pollen, etc. out of the water. In midsummer I usually keep it open all night in case the water cool needs to off a couple of degrees.

Every once in a while I scrub parts of it with some Clorox cleaner to get the stains off, but I don't worry about the dirt too much. It tends to look cleaner after a rain.

And that's another thing - I see many posts from people whose pools overflow because of heavy storms. With a cover, no problem! Just make sure the cover pump is on it if rain is forecast.

Good luck!

We are at the point of choosing our automatic pool cover color. Does anyone have royal blue and like it? Thinking that might good to look at when pool is closed. Or torn with charcoal color.

I have a coverstar in the dark grey like the picture above. It contrasts nicely with the white concrete and compliments the awnings in the pool pavilion that are red and grey (OSU fan, go Bucks!). They all look dirty when the leaves blow on them.

Cover star. Two years old. I don't think color has much to do with warmth increase. Having pool covered at night does help slow heat loss.

Dragging up an old post here. I see you have an auto cover with a raised hot tub. Do you cover the hot tub at all? We are about to start construction on a 20x40 pool with a 9x7 raised hot tub. We got a quote for an auto cover on the hot tub and it would cost 15k. We are doing the auto cover for safety reasons and would like to explore our options for a safe and attractive solution for the hot tub.

How has your dark green cover held up in the California sun?

We also have a tan one. I think they fade slower than the darker greens and blues. The darker covers also look dirtier, but it is the same amount of dirt on all of them :)
