tl;dr: the automatic pool cover stalled, the rope is tangled, and I cannot manually open or close it and don't know what to do.

Hello, TFP. First time poster also kind of first time lurker today. I've gone through the similar posts in this forum and tried troubleshooting on my own but I'm hit the limit of my knowledge.

For the last two years (since buying this house) I've used a pool service for opening/closing/repairing but, I'm currently experiencing financial hardship and doing my own pool servicing now. I fear I missed a step when opening the pool and now have broke it.

Today when my daughter opened the pool cover it only went about a foot before one side stopped moving. She tired to go the other way and close the pool cover but the one side did not move. I thought perhaps it was jammed up with something but it was no so I opened the motor cover and found the rope to be mangled. (see photo below). I went straight to Google and found in this forums where people posted similar issues and said they pulled the rope out to straighten it. I tired, but I wasn't able to really get it free at all.

I found instructions to manually open the pool using a 3/4" socket driver after turning the square thing that is between the rope spindles and the motor, to disengage the motor.

The problem I ran into is, I can't get the motor to disengage to manually open the pool or to remove the rope. The rope on top that feeds into the spool is extremely tight. I tried pulling the rope to manually close the cover and the cover will not move at all.

I'm not sure what to do or if there is also a motor issue, and I really cannot afford to call anyone to come look at it so I appreciate any insights this group can provide.
