Auto Cover - Not Engaging

Hey everyone,

Have a 2.5 yr old auto cover that now isn’t engaging. I build up the stone covering the box, and see it spinning but the part that I guess would be considered the gear isn’t catching so it doesn’t move the cover. I can kind of manually manipulate it to catch in one direction or the other, so I can get it to open or close, but if I switch to the opposite direction it no longer catches. Is this piece supposed to be so far apart from each end and be free moving? First issue we have ever had with the cover. See picture.

The shear pin may be broken. It's that round 1/4" pin in the photo. If it's loose at all it is most likely broken.
These instructions should help although not the same model but same principle.

Is that the pin through the center of that gear? It seems pretty solid. I think the gear just isn’t sliding far enough over on its own. Wondering if I just need to lube it.

Installer came out and fixed by installing a spacer they said.
