Hi Dennis. If it was me, there may have been extenuating circumstances, as the AA treatment is the go-to for extensive iron staining.
However, I don’t like having to fight to bring the FC back up, so prior to my water change, had used higher doses of Metal Magic, with the amount determined by the

So that’s one alternate option that seems to work for some people - in the case of iron anyway.
My second shortcut or low-hassle stain treatment is spot treatment with a dishwasher wand or spot wand tool, but in this use I’m mixing AA with water and loading the dispensing wand with same.
If a poster has copper stains, I generally recommend muriatic acid or sulfamic acid treatment as more effective...latter is a bit of a hassle imho.
So let’s start with why you don’t want to use AA, if you’ve tested the spot, if your water source is high in known metals, and if you read for metals in your water. That will help get started on the best method reccs.
PS - I did do a rather complex and controversial experiment with alum floc as a dual high po4 and iron removal approach. There are a whole pile of caveats I would issue about that once - eg what is your filter type and can you vacuum to waste — but in my case it was effective. That one is a “do at your own risk” approach.
