Ok, I finally got my hands on a local Leslie's pool supply store that had one in stock. This way I can legitimately register the warranty, for 39mo. I appreciate the convincing from you all. I've concluded, any way you look at it, you're definitely saving a significant amount of money and effort by replacing the salt cell. So, for the other's contemplating, just buy the darn thing and register it. Be careful about an online purchase though, because Hayward's warranty registration site explicitly states it will only warranty through "authorized dealers".
