I am under the same impression - although it is to be mounted under the cabinet. I just looked in the manual and did not see anything stating that it was waterproof (or weatherproof), but also no warnings not to get it wet.
I would suggest a call or email to Jandy.

I did mount it under the cabinet. We will see if it dries out. If not I will buy a new one $200. The sensor has to be good still. When the new one dies, I can splice in the controller. So I'm just prepaying for the sensor that will eventually die. What ever happens. I'm going to stick it inside one of the boxes.
