Some roughness is better than smooth. People have had surface sandblasted to remove old plaster, which produces a very smooth texture, only to have the plaster sub come back and intentionally rough it all up. You need a bit of roughness for the plaster to have good mechanical hold. The plaster applicator will then smooth the top layer out and you’ll barely notice it.

Just kind of feels like buying a brand new car, only for the dealership to crash it then repair before ever getting to drive it.. best analogy I can think of. Knowing what’s “under the hood” so to speak, makes me question the longevity and integrity of the structure. I tried to upload more pics but it kept saying they were too large

That is a VERY good analogy for what you are dealing with.

Okay now you know what you are seeing is "normal" for a plaster chip out. Now lets do some talk about how to get your new plaster of YOUR color started up the correct way. There different plaster start up methods. Talk to your PB about what start up they use for their new plaster. Let us know what they say. We mix cream soda with tequila in Arizona.
Served on the rocks. Great vanilla note.
Goes down really easy - until the tequila hits you.

The integrity of the shell is fine. The gunite shell is 8 to 10” of steel reinforced concrete with an ultimate compressive strength of 4000psi or greater. They chipped off maybe a 1/2” or so of material in some spots (notice the blue plaster that was left behind). The amount of material loss is inconsequential to the integrity of the gunite shell. Once the plaster goes on, it will be perfectly fine.

I know it feels like there’s been some damage but there hasn’t. There are far, far worse things that can happen to a gunite shell than some chipped off surface material. The pool will last just as long as it would have had they gotten the color right.

Feel good about it that they have to watch it also. And to them, it's thousands of dollars of foul up. A 'didn't read a label' foul up.

Only the contractors have been out, not the owner or sales contact in over a month.. I would feel much better if they were keeping an eye on it to make sure it’s being done correctly. However, all of your assurance that this is fine is helping me stay sane! Thank you.

I’m sorry for your stress but others have said the same - much worse could have happened. I also have some respect for the builder. They owned the mistake, didn’t mince words and set to making it right for you in the only way that they could. There are plenty of horror stories where the PB would have lied, masked the truth, or would have said or done anything to get you to accept the mistake. It’s unfortunate there was a screw up, however it seems you are dealing with a reputable PB (from what I can see) who realized the error and is working to do their best to give you what you wanted and paid for despite their mistake.
